KARAKTERISTIK RUANG BERSAMA PUBLIC SPACES PADA KAMPUNG PERKOTAAN

Abstract

Crowded settlement in urban kampongs with various characteristic problems represents common phenomenon in the big cities, especially in the developing countries. This is related to the city’s appeal with its rapid economic growth that impacted fast-flow inhabitants in the city. The local government is not yet to be balanced in providing adequate settlement for those in needs forcing these urban kampong people search solution for themselves. Similar phenomenon can be seen in urban kampongs in Malioboro area, which are located in downtown Yogyakarta. These urban kampongs have been developed to be the main support in providing settlement for trades and workers in Malioboro area. With their limitation, the inhabitants improvise to build public spaces. Substances that are contained on the public spaces characteristic are to build the communication to agree on using space together in the same or different time. In public space, limitations of space were made so flexible. Although seems that the barrier so cleared but between those people that doesn’t make it as barrier when interact. They respect it only when they use it as economic activity, but when it is the time for social activity, those barrier were so flexible, even blur. The findings of this study have raised awareness that the value of pubic spatial in the crowded settlement can not solely determined quantitatively. These knowledges are expected to finding in structuring the environment of crowded settlement in the centre of the city by maintaining its social capitals.
