Abstract

The government policy is essentially focused on improving the economic development that is impacted to the welfare of society. One of the government's efforts is through the development of industry, especially labor-intensive industries. The development of labor-intensive industries create employment opportunities that will increase the number of labor absorption. Semarang city has several potential small industries to absorb the labors . One of the small industries is a small batik industry, which is recorded in the data from the Department of Trade and Industry of Semarang has 41 business units. This study aimed to examine the effect of variable levels of labor costs, working capital, value of production and raw material costs on employment of small batik industry. The method of analysis in this research is multiple linier regression model with double log. The data in this study based on primary data obtained by method of direct interviews with small batik entrepreneur in Semarang. Result of this study conclued that labor cost has negative relationship, working capital and value of production has positive. It has significant relationship to labor absorption in small batik industry in Semarang, while labor raw material costs have no effect on labor absorption in small batik industry in Semarang. The variable that has the most dominant influence in the employment of small batik industry is working capital. It can be considered Semarang Government to increase more the working capital of batik production.
