Abstract

Background :Metabolic syndrome wasa condition of at least three of cardiovascular risk factors. One of the cardiovascular risk factor was dislipidemia, defined as the abnormality of lipid profile in the blood. Cholesterol level management could be treated with increase the consumption of fiber that have potential to reduce cholesterol level, for example “kepok” banana (Musa paradisiacal forma typical). “Kepok” banana contained fiber, inulin, and resistant starch that have the potential to reduce blood cholesterol level. The aim of study was to analyze the effect of “kepok” banana on total cholesterol level in pre metabolic syndrome rats. Methods :The study was a true experimental with pre-post randomized control group design on the pre metabolic syndrome Sprague Dawley. Rats were divided into 4 groups. There were negative control group that was given standard diet, positive control group that was given standard diet and STZ(Streptozotocin) and NAD (nicotinamide) induction, and two treatment groups that were given standard diet and STZ induction also “kepok” banana at dosages 4,5g/200g and 9g/200g within 21 days. Total cholesterol level checked with CHOD-PAP(glycerol phosphate oxydase–phenol amino phenazone). Data were analysed by Paired t-test and Anova. Result :The administration of “kepok” banana (Musa paradisiacal forma typical) ) at 4,5g/200g/day and 9g/200g/day dosages can decrease total cholesterol level from 179,12±7,90 to 143,18±4,39 and 177,81±7,11 to 123,02±4,94 in pre metabolic syndrome rats, it was significant(p=0,000). Conclusion :“Kepok” banana (Musa paradisiacal forma typical) at 4,5g/200g/day and 9g/200g/day dosages for 21 days can decrease total cholesterol level in pre metabolic syndrome rats.
