Abstract

Background Infarct lession in brain activated hematopoietic process in bone marrow. Leukocyte count on acute phase was suspected to have a correlation with ischemic stroke outcome. Aim To find the correlation between leukocyte count on admission and patient ischemic stroke outcome on discharge. Methods This analytic observational study used cross sectional design. Twentyone patients of ischemic stroke matching with inclusion and exclusion criteria were included consecutively following discharge order. NIHSS score was evaluated on discharge day, whereas leukocyte count was taken from medical record. Statistics test was using Pearson Correlation test and logistic regression. Results The mean of leukocyte count on admission was 9,37 x103 /μl (SD=0,668). The mean of NIHSS score was 4,43 (SD=0,893). Pearson correlation test found a weak positive correlation between leukocyte count on admission and NIHSS score on discharge (p = 0,036; r = 0,460). Logistic regression found that there was no significant difference on clinical outcome between patient who had leukocyte count more than 8,6 x103 /μl and patient who had leukocyte count less than 8,6 x103 /μl (p = 0,060). Conclusion There was a weak positive correlation between leukocyte count on admission and patient outcome on discharge. Key Words: ischemic stroke, leukocyte, stroke clinical outcome, NIHSS
