Abstract

Background: Preeclampsia is included in the major three causes of maternal death in the world according to WHO. There is an impaired of uterine spiral arteries remodeling in preeclampsia which influences blood circulation from mother to fetus. This leads to adaption of blood vessels. If it happens continuously, it can cause change in umbilical vessel structure including umbilical vein, as it delivers blood from placenta to fetus. Therefore, it will maintain the hemodynamic so that the blood with high nutrition is able to fulfill the fetal need. Objective: To determine the difference of umbilical vein’s thickness between subject with severe preeclampsia and subject with normotensive gestation. Methods: This is an analytic observational study with cross sectional design. The primary data was taken from observational morphometry in anatomical pathology slide from umbilical tissue. The samples consisted of 32 subjects; 16 subjects with severe preeclampsia served as case group and 16 subjects with normotensive gestation served as control group in dr. Kariadi Hospital Semarang. The analysis used Mann –Whitney test. Results: The analysis showed a significant difference of umbilical vein’s thickness between subject with severe preeclampsia and subject with normotensive gestational (p=0.03). The umbilical vein of subject with severe preeclampsia is thicker than umbilical vein of subject with normotensive gestational (642.3 ± 174.53 μm vs. 530.4 ± 65.23 μm, respectively). Conclusion: There is a significant difference of umbilical vein’s thickness between subject with severe preeclampsia and subject with normotensive gestational. Keyword: severe preeclampsia, umbilical vein, umbilical vein’s thickness
