Abstract
Material yang diharapkan mampu memenuhi tuntutan teknologi masa kini yang ramah lingkungan adalah material komposit dengan penguat serat alam. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui sifat tarik serat nanas dan komposit poliester berpenguat serat nanas. Bahan utama penelitian adalah serat nanas, NaOH dan resin unsaturated polyester Yukalac 157. Serat yang digunakan adalah serat tanpa perlakuan dan serat dengan perlakuan 5% NaOH selama 2 jam. Pengujian serat tunggal (single fiber) mengacu pada ASTM C1557. Pembuatan komposit dengan metode hand lay up dengan fraksi volume serat 30%. Pembuatan komposit dan prosedur pengujiannya mengacu pada ASTM D3039. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa perlakuan 5% NaOH mampu menghilangkan lignin dan kadar lilin di permukaan serat. Kekuatan tarik serat tunggal yang mendapat perlakuan alkali lebih tinggi dari pada serat tanpa perlakuan alkali yaitu sebesar 522,11 MPa. Sedangkan serat tanpa perlakuan alkali hanya sebesar 290,04 MPa, meningkat 80% dari kekuatan serat tanpa peerlakuan. Komposit yang seratnya mengalami perlakuan alkali memiliki kekuatan tarik yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan komposit yang seratnya tanpa perlakuan, yaitu sebesar 158,27 GPa. Sedangkan komposit tanpa perlakuan sebesar 95,46 GPa, meningkat kekuatan dibandingkan dengan komposit tanpa perlakuan sebesar 65%. Kata Kunci : Serat nanas, komposit, sifat tarik, penampang patahan. Materials which are expected to meet the demands of today's technology and environmentally friendly are composite material with natural fiber reinforcement. The purpose of this study was to determine the tensile properties of pineapple fiber and polyester composite with pineapple fiber strength. The main ingredient of this study was pineapple fiber, NaoH and unsaturated polyester resins Yukalac 157. Fiber used was the untreated fibers and fibers with 5% NaOH treated for 2 hours. Testing a single fiber referred to ASTM C1557. Composite Production by hand lay-up method was using 30 % of volume fiber fraction. Composite Production and test procedure referred to ASTM D3039. The result of this study showed that 5% NaOH treatment capable of removing lignin and wax levels on the surface of the fiber. Tensile strength of a single fiber with alkali-treated was higher than untreated alkali fiber which was 522.11 MPa. While fiber without alkali-treated was only 290.04 MPa, increased to 80% from fiber strength untreated. Fiber composite that was having alkali-treated had a higher tensile strength than the untreated fiber composite, which was 158.27 GPa. While the untreated composite was 95.46 GPa, increased strength compared to composite without treated was 65%. Keywords: pineapple fibers, composites, tensile properties, fracture cross section.
