Abstract

Income inequality inter-regions is one of complex problem in Indonesia. DI Yogyakarta has a high level of inequality compared to other provinces in the Java. It is proved by Gini index of all provinces in Java Island from 2003 to 2012. This study aimed 1) to count the degree of income inequality between regency/cities, 2 ) to find out the potential sectors and 3) to prove whether Kuznets curve is occurred in DI Yogyakarta. The analysis method that used in this study is analysis of Williamson index and Entropy Theil Index to measure income inequality inter-regions, Location Qoutient analysis (LQ) and shift share analysis to find out potential secotrs in DI Yogyakarta and Typology Klassen analysis to group each region based on economic growth and income per capita and to group sectors in the classification of 4 quadrants. The results indicates that income inequality in the regencies/cities in DI Yogyakarta is high (> 0.5), which the result of analysis of Williamson Index is 0.71 and analysis of Entropy Theil index is 4.354. Meanwhile, the inverted "U" Kuznets Curve hypothesis which describes the relationship between growth and inequality index is not occured in the DI Yogyakarta. Based on these findings, suggestions that can be given are to increase the private investment while giving the ease of bureaucracy and the investment is directed to a relatively underdeveloped area. In addition, to develop and enhance the potential sectors in each regions in order to improve the economic growth in DI Yogyakarta
