Abstract

Panca Dharma Wanita (Women Five Roles) is one of the texts that is always recited by the member of PKK (Empowerment of Family Welfare) every time they hold meetings. This text contains the concepts underlined their position and roles in the family and in the society. This concept is embraced without much resistance for more than three decades. This research is aimed at figuring out the power domination revealed in the text through Critical discourse Analysis approach. The research subjects are the women of the members of PKK in RW 1 Bangetayu Wetan village, Genuk Semarang. Purposive sampling is chosen by considering the different background of the respondents, which include their and their husband’s education background, jobs, and the size of their family. Data are collected by using interview method. The research shows that all of the women in the study know exactly their role and function in their family life. However, they are not aware that their role and fuctions are the subordinates ones, as their freedom and rights are constraint by the existence of their husband. One of the reasons of this unawareness is that women consider their husband (men) as having higher position, roles, and function than women. Within the frame of CDA, Panca Dharma Wanita contains the ideas of power domination, in other words, Panca Dharma puts the women within their domestic roles only by focusing on housewifization and ‘motherism’. Those two areas are not negotiable or like it or not, the women must fulfil those functions unless they preferred to be judged as not being wowen. Once the women are allowed to involve themselves in public domain, they are not proudly supported because there are some norms that may ‘constraints’ women’s role, such as they must get their husbands’ permition, and if they are proven to be more successful then their husbands, they must be humble and respect their husband as always. Furthermore, Panca Dharma Wanita suggests women that they may involve themselves in public arena only when they have finished handling their domestic business. Key words: Panca Dharma Wanita, PKK, dominasi power, hegemoni
