TRANSFORMASI NOVEL KE FILM KAJIAN EKRANISASI TERHADAP THE SCARLET LETTER KARYA NATHANIEL HAWTHRONE

Abstract

Penelitian ini berjudul Transformasi Novel ke Film, Kajian Ekranisasi terhadap The Scarlet Letter Karya Nathaniel Hawthorne. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat transformasi dan mencari persamaan dan perbedaan antara novel dan filmnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan sastra bandingan, sebuah pendekatan dalam ilmu sastra yang tidak menghasilkan teori tersendiri, sebagai pendekatannya. Terdapat beberapa perbedaan pada novel dan film The Scarlet Letter. Perbedaan tersebut ada pada alur, tokoh, narator, tema, dan latar. Pada alur cerita, akhir cerita dalam novel dan film berbeda. Dalam novel, akhir cerita adalah sad end, Pendeta Arthur Dimmesdale meninggal dunia. Sedangkan dalam film, akhir cerita happy end, tokoh utama hidup bahagia. Untuk tokoh, di dalam film muncul beberapa tokoh yang di dalam novel tidak ada. Kemunculan tokoh di dalam film yang tidak terdapat dalam novel tersebut untuk menjaga kesinambungan cerita. Narator dalam novel adalah orang ketiga, seorang laki-laki pegawai kantor pajak yang tidak disebutkan namanya, Sedangkan di dalam film narator adalah Pearl yang diceritakan sudah dewasadan kemudian menceritakan kisah ibunya. Pada tema perbedaan ada pada penekanannya. Dalam novel penekanan tema ada pada dosa, sedangkan dalam film ada pada cinta suci. Latar dalam novel dan film The Scarlet Letter tidak jauh berbeda. Latar yang dipakai adalah masyarakat Puritan di New England pada pertengahan abad XVII. Kata kunci: transformasi, ekranisasi. This research is entitled Novel into FilmTransformation, ‘Ekranisasi’ Study on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. The aim of this research are to describe the transformation and to find out the similarities and differences in the novel and the film. This research used comparative literature approach, an approach in literary study which does not have its own theory. There are some differences in The Scarlet Letter novel and film, they are plot, character, narrator, theme,and setting. The end of the novel is different from that of the film. The novel has sad end, Reverend Master Dimmesdale died at the end of the story. At the end of the film, the three main characters lived happily. There are some characters in the film but not in the novel. The new characters in the film help the continuity of the story. The narrator in the novel is the third person, a no-name man from the Custom House, and the narrator in the film is the grown-up Pearl who told about her mother. The difference on the theme is on the emphasis. In the novel, theme was emphasized on sin, but in the film it was emphasized on love. The setting used in the novel and film is similar, the Puritan New England in the middle of XVII century. Key words: transformation, ‘ekranisasi’.
