Abstract

Communication research is a sysfematic attempt to produce knowledge. lt related to the production and using of verbal and nonverbal symbols in social-cultural context. ln practice, communication research should apply either single or multiple approach, that is quantitative approach or/and qualitative approach. The difference between the two of them are characteized by paradigm as philosophical foundation of research. Paradigm is a basic belief system that based on ontological, epistemological, axiological, and methodological assumptions. Communication research paradigm is not monolithic in nature. There are several known such as positivism, interpretive, and critical paradigm. Paradigm is human construction, ideas that represent several ways to understand reality. Researcher should determine theories and research method based on paradigm, that will have implications on the role of researcher, research design, research setting, measurement instruments, and theory building.
