Abstract

This research is about political study of the Chinese “Peranakan” in Indonesia, particularly in Java, but this does not mean that there is a sharp separation between the political groups of Chinese “Totok” and “Peranakan” factions. Instead there is an interaction between the two in developing nationalism encapsulated in three main political streams, namely Sin Po group oriented to China mainland, Chung Hua Hui community which oriented politically to Dutch Colonial Government, and Tinghoa Indonesia Party (PTI) which oriented to Indonesian nationalism. Nevertheless this study will focus on the half breed Chinese political movement, while political activity of the Chinese “Totok” will be discussed as far as their role in highlighting the Chinese “Peranakan” group. Key word: the chinese “peranakan”, the chinese “totok”, chinese nationalism
