Abstract

This research aims to provide an overview of the organizational culture at the family business, which PT. SidoMuncul is selected as a research object. An analysis to the elements of the organizational culture include artifacts; values and beliefs; and underlying assumptions was done in order to describe the organizational culture at PT. SidoMuncul. This is a qualitative research using ethnographic approach. The technique of the data collection include observation; an interview with a guideline and in depth interview; and documentation. The results shows that there are ten artifacts that forms the organizational culture at PT. SidoMuncul, that is, ”the way company welcome the outsiders”; “logo”; “physical settings”; material objects; “the dress manner”; “ceremony/ritual”; “communication pattern”; “reward and punishment”; “hero/enemy”; and “rules and SOP”. Some of the artifacts are still thick with an informal ambiance. The results also shows that there are five espoused values and beliefs that forms the organizational culture at PT. SidoMuncul, that is “harmonize the traditional side and continuous improvements”, “honesty”; “kinship”; “loyalty”; and “discipline”, which most of them are sourced from the “prior learning”. The underlying assumption that found in PT. SidoMuncul include “correct decisions discovered from authority figures, altough employees are given autonomy”; “proactive to the environment”; “we are family and respect each other, but the family is a hierarchy”; ”employees have a “doing orientation“; “we comes from the past, but the present has to be faced, and the future has to be prepared”. Javanese culture and Chinese culture that based on confusius value become an instruments that forms organizational culture in PT. SidoMUcul. The research also shows that a set of underlying assumptions in PT. SidoMuncul are very close to the “laissez-faire” cultural pattern
