Abstract

BACKGROUND. Prior to the discovery of insulin treatment, diet was the main treatment for this diabetes mellitus, including consumptions of traditional herbs. This research uses chayotte (Sechium edule) extract containing calcium, niacin, and flavonoid as an effective and economic traditional cure. PURPOSE To analyze the effects of Chayotte (Sechium edule) extract administration on the glucose level reduction in aloxan-induced male wistar mice. METHOD It is an experimental research using the pre and post test randomized controlled group design. Experimental animals are 25 male wistar mice divided into 5 treatment groups; pure water (negative control), metformin dose of 18 mg/wistar mice (positive control), and three groups given 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 g/kg of bodyweight chayote (Sechium edule) extract respectively. Each group has been induced with aloksan to a glucose level of approximately 126 mg/dL, and then their post aloxan glucose level is measured. Treatments are administered for 28 days, and during day 14 and 28 their fasting glucose levels are measured as post test 1 and post test 2 data. RESULTS All treatment groups indicate significant values at post aloxan, post test 1, and post test 2, with p < 0.05. Only the group given 0.75 g/kg of bodyweight chayotte (Sechium edule) extract shows better reduction compared to using pure water, but still not as good as using metformin. CONCLUSION A dose of 0.75 g/kg of bodyweight chayote (Sechium edule) extract has better ability to lower glucose level compared to using pure water, but it is still not as effective as using metformin. KEYWORDS chayotte (Sechium edule) extract, glucose level, aloxan
