Abstract

Background Knowledge on reproductive health is a high demand for adolescents since they start the puberty period. However, reproductive health education in Indonesia is not commonly implemented. Education is needed to prevent problems associated with reproductive health, and counseling is a particular means to educate. Aim To understand the effect of counseling to knowledge level of reproductive health on adolescent students of SMP Kristen Gergaji. Method This research was conducted using quasi-experimental one group pretest-posttest design. Thirty-three samples were taken by cluster sampling from second grade students. Pretest questionnaire was given to subjects followed by counseling, and posttest questionnaire was given one week after. Data were analyzed using paired t test and its alternative Wilcoxon test. Results There was significant difference on knowledge level before and after counseling (p<0.01). Significant differences were displayed on three topics: anatomy and physiology of reproductive organs, reproductive organs hygiene, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS with (p) value of 0.028, 0.022, and 0.013 respectively. Conclusion Counseling is effective to increase knowledge level of reproductive health on adolescent students of SMP Kristen Gergaji, specifically on anatomy and physiology of reproductive organs, reproductive organs hygiene, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS. Keywords counseling, knowledge level, reproductive health, adolescents
