PENGARUH PASTA GIGI DENGAN KANDUNGAN PROPOLIS TERHADAP PEMBENTUKAN PLAK GIGI

Abstract

Background: Plaque is the main cause of caries and periodontal disease. Caries and periodontal disease can be prevented by inhibit the formation of dental plaque. One of the way to inhibit the formation of plaque is by brushing the teeth with toothpaste. In this study used toothpaste containing propolis. According to previous studies, propolis containing flavonoid apigenin and tt-farnesol that can inhibit the formation of dental plaque by inhibiting glucosyltransferase enzym and inhibiting membrane integrity of Streptococcus mutans. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of toothpaste containing propolis on the formation of dental plaque. Methods: This study is using the post test only control group design. The sample of this study is the boarding school students Hidayatullah, Yayasan Al-Burhan, Gedawang, Semarang, as many as 30 students were divided into two groups of randomized control group and treatment group. Control group given by toothpaste without contanining propolis. Treatment group given by toothpaste with containing propolis. Plaque measured use the plaque index according to sillness and loe after use toothpaste with containing propolis about five hours. The data analyzed by computer program with Mann-Whitney test and its significancy accepted if p<0,05. Result: The result of the statistic with Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference of 0,002 ( p<0,05 ) between the control group with the treatment group. The control group has median 3,41 and the tratment group has 0,58. Conclusion: The use of toothpaste contaning propolis can prevents dental plaque formation and there are significancy difference between dental plaque on the control group and treatment group, where is dental plaque on the treatment group is lower than control group.
