Abstract
Background Salivary pH is one of component which gives contribution to mouth acidity. Pathogen bacteria in the mouth will fermentate sugar to be lactat acid that will descend the mouth acidity, so it caused demineralization of teeth enamel. To prevent descending of salivary pH can be done chemically. In this research used the solution of miswak extract (Salvadora persica) as a mouth wash because there is fitochemical that able to prevent descending of the mouth acidity by blocked the growth of pathogen bacteria, descend viscosity and increase secretion of the salivary glands, also blocked pelicel formation. This research has a purpose to know the influence of miswak extract solution on salivary pH. Aim To know the influence of miswak (Salvadora persica) extract solution on salivary pH. Methods The clinical experiment research is done by the design of the post test only control group design. The sample of this research is the students of Hidayatullah Yayasan Al-Burhan Moslem Boarding School, Gedawang, Semarang. There are 74 students that divided into two groups randomly that is control group and test group. The test group is given the miswak extract solution with 25% concentration. Salivary pH measured using digital pH meter in scale 0,0-14,0 with 0,1 sensitivity from Hanna. The data analyzed by Shapiro-Wilk experiment continued by Mann-Whitney test. Results Mann-Whitney test has produced significance value p<0,05. There is significant different (p<0,05) at the test group if compared with the control group. The result of this research shows that the value of salivary pH at the test group (median=7,50) is higher than the test group (median=7,30). Conclusion Giving the solution of miswak extract 25% can increase salivary pH. There is the significant different value between control group and test group, which is the salivary pH at the test group is higher than control group. Key Words Miswak extract solution, Miswak extract mouth wash solution, Salivary pH.
