Abstract
Background: Gurah is one of the traditional therapy to treat chronic sinusitis. Sinusitis caused by bacterial or viral infection. The role of PMN leukocytes in the process of phagocytosis is very important. In this study Senggugu root extract is used as gurah ingredient contains flavonoids and cytosterol that according to previous studies serve as an anti-inflammatory agents. Aims: To analyze the change of the number of PMN cells in the standardized gurah treatment with root of Senggugu (Clerodendron serratum Spreng.) Methods: The design of the study was observational with pre and post controlled group. Sample of this study were patients of chronic sinusitis in the department of Dr Kariadi Semarang as many as 66 patients, they were divided randomly into two groups, namely the control and treatment groups. Gurah treatment groups were given a treatment. Analysis of the data was processed by a SPSS 17.0 with unpaired t-test to compare treatment and control groups and paired t-test tocompare the conditions before and after gurah treatments. The significance levels were accepted if p <0.05. Results: The number and type of the average PMN cells in patients before gurah 65±5.1% for neutrophil, 2.24±2.0% for eosinophils, and 0.36±0.5% for basophils. The number and type of the average PMN cells in patients after gurah treatment is 63±3.1% for neutrophils, 2.15±2.0% for eosinophils, and0.42±0.5% for basophils. Unpaired t-test produced a mean significant difference (p <0.05) between control and treatment groups on the score difference 0.001 on the difference score of neutrophils and 0.041 on the difference score of eosinophils. Although the obtained mean results were not significant (p> 0.05) on the score difference of basophiles 0.973. Paired t-test result in significant differences (p<0.05) between groups before and after gurah treatment score of 0.004 on neutrophils. While eosinophils and basophils to produce a non-significant mean differences (p> 0.05), amounting to 0.366 at scores of eosinophils and basophils score of 0.414. Conclusions: There is a significant decrease in neutrofil and eosinophil count in gurah chronic sinusitis patients than non gurah chronic sinusitis patients. The number of PMN cells in chronic sinusitis patients with gurah treatment better than non gurah. Key words: gurah, chronic sinusitis, the number and types of PMN cells.
