Abstract

Background ARV drug combination, which has decreased both HIV patient morbidity and mortality, is frequently associated with dyslpidemia. The incidence of cardiovascular disease is increasing among HIV/AIDS patients after receiving a long term ARV drug combination. Atherosclerosis is the proccess preceding most of cardiovascular disease. Subclinical atherosclerosis process could be assessed through carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) measurement. Aim The aim is to know the characteristic of carotid intima media thickness(cIMT) of HIV patients receiving antiretroviral in dr. Kariadi Central Hospital. Method This is a cross sectional study. There were 26 HIV patient samples consisting of 13 paired samples after matching procedure based on age and sex. Group I had been receiving ARV  3 years and group II had been receiving ARV > 3 years. The characteristic of cIMT was analyzed based on age, sex, ARV combination, CD4 count, and the length of ARV exposure. Statistical analysis was done by One – Way Anova, Independent T – test, Kruskall – Wallis, and Paired T – Test. Result There was a significant difference of cIMT mean among age groups (p = 0,008). After performing post-hoc anaysis there were significant mean difference in age group of 25 – 29 years (0,504  0,108 mm) compared to 40 – 49 years(0,666  0,074 mm), and 30 – 39 years (0,549  0,081 mm) compared to 40 – 49 years (p = 0,003 and p = 0,015). There was a significant cIMT mean difference (p= 0,029) between man (0,603  0,099 mm) and woman (0,515  0,094 mm). There were not any significant cIMT mean difference in both ARV combination (p = 0,426) and length of ARV exposure (p = 0,953). Conclusion Age and sex were significantly associted with cIMT mean. CD4 count, ARV combination (line 1 ARV) and length of ARV exposure have no significant association with cIMT mean. Keywords: Antiretroviral, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, intima media thickness.
