Abstract

Background: Anesthesia and surgery can trigger stress response, with effect such as increasing blood sugar which can cause hypertension, tachycardia, hyperglicemia, protein catabolism, suppressed immune response, and physiologycal kidney changes. It also happened in sectio caesaria, therefore it is important to find out the least blood sugar increasing anesthesia method, which is by giving epidural anesthesia. Aims: To find out the effect of epidural anesthesia towards blood sugar decrease in patients who underwent sectio caesaria surgery. Methods: This study used cross sectional pre and post test, with using secondary data from PPDS Anestesiologi RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang members’ study. Samples were 16 patients, sampling method done by using consecutive sampling. These samples received epidural anesthesia and using epidural marcain medicine 15 ml (75 mg). Assessment of blood sugar level taken from capillary blood finger number II, III which were assessed twice (pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia) with Blood Glucose Test Meter Glucose Dr. Statistic test done with Paired T-test, if the data distributed normally, and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, if the data distributed abnormally, with significance degree of p <0,05. Results: From the statistic test, we got the result that the difference between blood sugar level in pre and post test epidural anesthesia had p = 0,057 ( p > 0,05). It showed that the difference between blood sugar decrease in pre and post epidural anesthesia was not significant. Conclusions: There was no significant difference between using epidural anesthesia towards blood sugar level in sectio caesaria surgery. Keywords: epidural anesthesia, blood sugar level, sectio caesaria.
