Abstract

Background: Formalin is a chemical compound which widely used in educational and research field mainly for preservative and disinfectant. However nowadays many used formalin as preservative for foods, this issue is a violation against the minister of health regulation. Many researchs have counducted experiment on the effect of inhalance formalin towards kidney, but they are slightly any researchs about the effect of oral formalin towards histopathological image of kidney. Aim: This research aimed to proof the effect of 12-weeks administered gradual dose of oral formalin to the histopathological image of wistar rat’s kidney. Method: Experimental study with post test only control group design. The samples were 20 wistar rats which have already met and fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria were adpated for 7 days. After adaptation wistar rat divided using simple random sampling into 4 groups. K (control group) was not given formalin, P1 was given 50 mg/kgBW/day (0.019-0.025 ml/day) oral formalin; P2 was given 100 mg/kgBW/day (0.038-0.050 ml/day) oral formalin; and P3 was given 200 mg/kgBW/day (0.075-0.100 ml/day) oral formalin. After 12-weeks, all kidney samples were taken to indentified any changes in histopatological image of wistar rat’s kidney. Data was described in table, picture, and statiscal analysis using SPSS for Windows 15.0. Result: P3 showed the highest median of total kidney cells damage. From Kruskal-Wallis test showed a significant difference (p=0.002). Mann Whitney test showed significant differences between K-P1 (p=0.050), K-P2 (p=0.005), K-P3 (p=0.004), and P1-P3 (p=0.014). Conclusion: The 12-weeks administered gradual dose of oral formalin gave change in histopatological image of wistar rat’s kidney. Changed cells include atrophy and/or dilatation of tubule cells, and degenerated cells. Keywords: Formalin, formaldehyde, gradual dose, histopathological image of kidney
