Abstract

Background A condition where the bone marrow produces fewer white blood cells is called leukopenia. Leukopenia trigger in Indonesia is probably caused by trend of changes in lifestyle, especially Western diet which is containing high calories and fat even high trans fatty acid too. In addition, Indonesian people also consume fried food very much (deep frying foods) which contains high trans fatty acid. Aim To prove the influence of trans fatty acid intake into the counts of white blood cells Sprague Dawley rats. Methods This study was purely experimental research with Randomized Control Group Pretest and Posttest Design. The subjects were 21 male 8 week old Sprague Dawley rats. The samples were divided into three groups; control group fed with standard, treatment group 1 fed with 5% trans fatty acid, and treatment group 2 fed with 10% trans fatty acid during 8 weeks. Each group took blood administration before and after intervention to count the white blood cells. The statistics tests were paired t-test, Wilcoxon test and independent t-test. Results The difference in counts of white blood cells between treatment group 1 was not significantly lower (p=0.6) than the control group and so did treatment group 2 (p=0.5). The difference in counts of white blood cells between treatment group 2 was not significantly lower (p = 0.3) than treatment group 1. Conclusion A decrease in the counts of white blood cells of Sprague Dawley rats were not significant after trans fatty acid consumption. Keywords trans fatty acid, white blood cell, leukopenia, Sprague Dawley rats.
