Abstract

Background : Incidence rate of ESRD has been increasing every year. This was a medical, social, and economic issue, especially in the developing countries which had limited resources to fund their cost of health care. Most of these countries rarely had good national system of census for the kidney disease cases. This issue caused the incidence and prevalence of ESRD to had not been known exactly. Aim : To determine the death rate of ESRD patients in ICU and HCU of Dr. Kariadi General Hospital from Februari 2010 – Februari 2012. Methods : This research was a descriptive study. The sample of this study was ESRD patients who had been admitted in ICU and HCU of Dr. Kariadi General Hospital from Februari 2010 - Februari 2012. The data was taken from medical record in ICU and HCU of Dr. Kariadi General Hospital Semarang. Results : There were 43 cases of ESRD patients who was admitted in ICU and HCU. From that amount there were 27 (62,8%) died and 16 (37,2%) lived. Indications of admission for ESRD patients in ICU and HCU were 22 (51,2%) for breathing disorder, 13 (30,2%) for decreased consciousness, 4 (9,3%) for septicemia, 2 (4,7%) for overhydration, and 1 (2,3%) for each of post nefrostomy and hypertension. The causes of death from ESRD patients who had been admitted in ICU and HCU of Dr. Kariadi General Hospital from Februari 2010 – 2012 were septicemia (44,4%) and CHF (14,8%). For APACHE II score, the score range of 20-24 became the largest with 13 (30,2 %) patients.The most widely used payment method was self-payment in 17 (39,5%) patients. Conclusions : For the last 2 years, based on medical record on Dr. Kariadi General Hospital from Februari 2010 until Februari 2012, there were 27 (62,8%) died from 43 cases of ESRD patients who had been admitted in ICU and HCU.
