Background Anemia is a symtom due to decreasing counts of red blood cells which caused by consumption of fast foods containing trans fatty acid. Intake of trans fatty acid may induce systemic inflammatory response so they can reduce the counts of red blood cells. Aim To prove the influence of trans fatty acid intake on the counts of red blood cells Sprague Dawley rats. Methods This study was purely experimental designs research with Randomized Control Group Pretest and Posttest Design. The subjects of study were 21 tail of male Sprague Dawley rats with age of 8 weeks. The samples divided into three groups which were the control group fed with standard, treatment group 1 fed with 5% trans fatty acid and treatment group 2 fed with 10% trans fatty acid during eight weeks. Each group of its blood cell taken before and after intervention to be measured amount of red blood cells. The statistics used were pair t-test and independent t-test. Results There were difference in counts of red blood cells between group fed with 5% and 10 % trans fatty acid were not significantly lower (p>0,05) than the control group. Difference in counts of red blood cells between group fed with 10% trans fatty acid were also not significantly lower (p>0,05)9) than the group fed with 5% trans fatty acid. Conclusion A decrease in the counts of red blood cells which were not significant in Sprague Dawley rats after getting a trans fatty acid intake.
