Abstract

Background Alpinia galanga’s rhizome is a traditional medicinal plant that has the effect of anti-fungal, anti-tumor and anti-cancer. Zinc pyrithione is a compound used as an antibacterial and antifungal. Dandruff is the exfoliation of excessive stratum corneum cells in the scalp, whitish, and accompanied by intense itching. Dandruff can be caused by the secretion of the sebaceous glands are excessive. Another cause of dandruff is the fungus, especially Pityrosporum ovale. Objective Compare the effectiveness of Alpinia galanga’s rhizome extract with 1% zinc pyrithione in inhibiting the growth of P. ovale in patients with dandruff. Method This research was using an experimental study. As samples were 30 patients of dandruff with clinical founding. Diagnosis of P. ovale was based on the result of microscopic examination of skin scrapping from samples using KOH 10% with blue black parker ink, and inoculation on the olive oil Sabouraud Dextrose Agar with chloramfenicol 50μg/cc media on 370 C for 2-5 days. The colonies of P. ovale were diluted in sterilized 0,9% NaCl to make the solution equal to 0,5 McFarland standard. As many as 0,1 cc of solution was cultivated on the olive oil SDA media supplemented with 100% Alpinia galanga’s rhizome extract and 1% zinc pyrithone. After that, the media were incubated on 370 C for 2-5 days. Data was analyzed by chi square or fisher exact test. P value <0,05 was considered significant. Result On the control media all P. ovale growth. The treatment group of 1 % zinc pyrithione P.ovale growth on 1 media, the treatment group of 100% Alpinia galanga’s rhizome extract P.ovale growth on 2 media. From the Fisher analysis test the value of p > 0,05, suggesting that Alpinia galanga’s rhizome extract has the same effectiveness with 1 % zinc pyrithione. Conclusion Alpinia galanga’s rhizome extract has the same effectiveness with 1% zinc pyrithione. Key words Alpinia galanga’s rhizome extract, 1% zinc pyrithione, dandruff, P.ovale
