Abstract
Background : General anesthesia is an act that most are done in surgery. Incidence of post-surgery sepsis or SIRS (Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome) frequently occurs in patients after surgery. One marker that is used to assess the inflammatory response to infection is procalcitonin. Induction of anesthesia medication that is often used in general anesthesia such as propofol and pentothal. Aim : To determine the differences effects of propofol and pentothal administration on procalcitonin concentration in mastectomy. Methods : This study in an observational study with cross sectional design. Data derived from secondary data with a sample of 16 patients. Patients who meet inclusion and exclusion criteria were divided into 2 groups. In the group 1 given induction of propofol 2,5 mg/body weight and group 2 given induction pentothal 5 mg/body weight. Data was taken from each group before induction, four hours post induction and twenty four hours post induction. Analysis data used SPSS program. Results : This study showed average levels of PCT in the propofol group before treatment 0,0500,000 ng/ml, 4 hours after treatment 0,0610,125 ng/ml, and 24 hours after treatment 0,1750,456 ng/ml. This levels increased significantly with p=0,008. While in the pentothal group levels of PCT was not significant with p=1,000 and it was constant in before treatment, 4 hours after treatment, and 24 hours after treatment 0,0500,000 ng/ml. Whereas in group 2 comparisons between groups 1 and 2 were significantly seen at 24 hours after treatment with p=0.038 (<0.05). Conclusions : Propofol significantly increased the percentage of procalcitonin concentration whether pentothal given not significantly result for procalcitonin concentration. Keywords : propofol, pentothal, procalcitonin, general anesthesia
