Abstract

Background: Health education about dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) is the way to increase knowledge about DHF with the aim of changing or influencing human behavior in prevention of dengue. The purpose of health education on DHF is informing people about the disease. Aim: This study aims to determine the impact of health education on mother’s knowledge, attitudes and practices in the prevention of DHF for children. Methods: This study was quasi experimental design interventional with non-equivalent control group design on March until June 2012. The study was conducted in the Gajahmungkur’s Village (treatment group) and the Tembalang’s Village (control group). The treatment group was given health education about DHF. The control group did not receive any counseling. Health education’s instruments were a direct extension and leaflets. Hypothesis test was performed by using Mann Whitney and Friedman test. Results: KAP score treatment group at pretest was 106.07 (poor category), posttest at 15th day is 131.59 (medium category) and posttest at 30th day was 135.07 (medium category). Whereas control group at pretest was 113.63 (medium category), posttest at 15th day is 114.04 (medium category) and posttest at 30th day was 113.78 (medium category). The treatment group found a significant increase in KAP scores until the 30th day of observation (p <0.001), whereas the control group no significant differences in KAP scores (p = 0.9). Conclusions: health education impacts the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices of mothers in the prevention of DHF in children. Key words: knowledge, attitudes, practices, DHF, KAP
