Abstract

Background : Skill Lab training is a training that its purpose is to prepare an undergraduate medical student facing medical clerkship. Skill lab training in Medical Faculty of Diponegoro University is only implemented on 7th semester. Ideally, skill lab training is started since the beginning of semester because it will motivate the will to study of the students and giving a better preparation for medical clerkship. Purpose: To analyze the needs of a medical student about skill lab training to be given on each level of education and the influencing factors to that perceptions. Method: The study’s design was cross sectional that was held on May-July 2012. The subjects were 153 students of Medical Faculty of Diponegoro University that had received skill lab training. The variables studied were the perceptions about the need for skill lab training to be given on each level of education; The factors from personal and organizational domain with specific questionnaires. Statistic test used to differentiate the variables was 2 test. Multivariate was used to analyze the most influencing factors. Result : There were 91.5% of total students who think that skill lab training is needed to be given on each level of education. The factors influence the need for skill lab training to be given on each level of education on personal domain: the experience that made the students motivated to join skill lab training (93.3%, p=0.04); organizational domain: student’s thought about the low number of mannequins (91.3%, p=0.003), student’s thought about the low number of medical tools (91.7%, p=0.004), and the quality of the staffs (94%, p=0.03). The result of multivariate test was there was no influencing factor. Conclusion: Medical students feel that it is needed for skill lab training on each level of education. That perception is influenced by the study experience, the tools, and the teacher’s quality. Key word: perception, student’s needs, skill lab training
