Abstract

Backgrounds Formalin is an ingredient widely used in education and research, the body preservatives and disinfectants. Formalin is currently misused as food preservative, it is contrary to the regulations from ministry of health. Formalin can interfere with the safety, quality, and nutrients from the foods that have been set out in government regulations, which would ultimately harm consumers. Today there are several references and research on the formalin, and formalin effects of neurological disorders have been investigated clinically. But the study the influence of formalin on brain histopathologic picture remains unclear. Aims Knowing the histopathological pictures difference of wistar rat brain after peroral gradual dose of formalin administrations for 12 weeks Methods True experimental laboratory research with post test only control group design. Study sample was male wistar rats that has met inclusion and exclusion criteria and were randomized by simple random sampling. Formaldehyde consumption is 0 m/day in control group; 1/16 lethal dose (0.019 to 0.025 ml / day) in group I; 1/8 lethal doses (0.038 to 0.050 ml / day) in group II; ¼ lethal dose (0.075 to 0.100 ml / day) in group III. Data was collected through direct observation of histopathologic picture of the brain. Hypothesis testing using one-way ANOVA test and Post Hoc test afterwards. Results The highest mean of total brain cells damage was in treatment group III. ANOVA test showed a significant difference (p = 0.000). Post-hoc test showed significant differences in K-I (p=0,003), K-II (p=0,000), K-III (0,000), I-II (p=0,030), I-III (p=0,003) Conclusion Gradual doses of formalin administration causes histopathological pictures changes in the wistar rat brain. The histopathological change observed in brain structure was a decrease in the number of nerve cells.. Keywords Formalin, formaldehyde, peroral, histopathological picture of the brain, wistar rats.
