Abstract
Background : Mental health is important factor for bright adolescent future. Screening of mental, emotional and behaviour problems is very important to prevent further noticeable behaviour problem. Mental, emotional and behaviour problems are caused by many factors. One of the factors that affects mental, emotional and behaviour problems is school environment. Aim : The aim of the study was to describe mental and emotional problems in acceleration and regular classes junior high school (SMP) students. Methods : Design of the study was observational descriptive study. Subjects for this study were students of SMPN 2 Semarang. This study recruited 88 respondents; 40 from acceleration class and 48 from regular class. Data were collected by filling Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), questionnaire of characteristic samples which had been tested before, focus group discussion and interview. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis. Results : Emotional symptoms (mean=3,31 SD=2,15), hiperactivity (mean=3,83 SD=1,83), conduct problem (mean=2,79 SD= 1,34), and peer problem (mean=2,27 SD = 1,77) in regular students were higher than acceleration students. Acceleration students reported higher prosocial behaviour score (mean=8,67 SD = 1,46) than regular students (7,50 SD = 1,89). Finally, girls had higher total difficulties score (mean=11 SD=4,8) and prosocial behaviour score (mean=8,08 SD=1,75) than boys (mean=9,84 SD = 4,65 ; mean=7,97 SD = 1,88). Conclusions : The prevalence and mean score of mental emotional problems in regular students were higher than acceleration students. The prevalence of mental emotional problems in girls was higher than boys. Keywords : mental emotional, SDQ, acceleration class
