Abstract

Background : The combination of genetic, environment, and EBV infection risk factors are responsible in causing NPC. Preventive action in dealing with NPC remains an unsolved problem until now. The purpose of this research is to discover the association between risk factors and NPC histopathologic type so that preventive action can be applied. Methods : The design of this research was a case control study without matching, involving NPC patients who are dignosed in Kariadi Hospital Semarang during 2007-2011 as sample. One hundred twenty eight NPC patients that meet the inclusion criteria were given indepth interview with questioner during January 2011-April 2011. The datas are described in tables and pictures form. Chi square, odds ratio are tested using SPSS for Windows. Result : Chi square test between variable using α=0,05, CI 95%, and power 80% between genetic risk factor and NPC histopathologic type p=1,00 OR=1,00 CI 95%=0,330-3,035, between internal environment risk factor and NPC histopathologic type p=0,11 OR=1,87 CI 95%=0,853-4,104, between smoked fish/meat consumption and NPC histopathologic type p=0,02 OR=0,36 CI 95%=0.149-0,869, between can food consumption and NPC histopathologic type p =0,01 OR=0,40 CI 95%=0,190 – 0,852, between external environment risk factor and NPC histopathologic type p=0,38 OR=1,68 CI 95%=0,520-5,462, between cigarette smoke explanation and NPC histopathologic type p=0,008 OR=10,30 CI 95%=1,266-83,968, and between the total score of the risk factors and NPC histopathologic type p=1,00 OR=1,00 CI 95%=0,492-2,034. Conclusion : There is no significant association between genetic risk factor, internal environment risk factor, external environment risk factor, and the combination of those three risk factors and NPC histopathologic type. There is a significant association between smoked fish/meat consumption and NPC histopathologuc type, and between can food consumption and NPC histopathologic type. Also, there is a significant association between cigarette smoke explanation and NPC histopathologic type. Keywords : nasopharyngeal carcinoma, risk factors, histopathologic type
