Abstract
Background : Some studies show strong relationship between allergic rhinitis and asthma. So, both diseases called United Airways Disease. Bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) is one of some main pathophysiologic factors of asthma. BHR is used for pathologic marker of asthma’s patients which measured by peak expiratory flow (PEF). Because of that, this research want to prove relationship between allergic rhinitis and PEF to see tendency someone to get asthma. Method : Cross-sectional analytic design on students of SMA Negeri 3 Semarang since April to Mei 2011. ISAAC test is used to diagnose students which have positive or negative allergic rhinitis. Class randomization was done to reach minimal sample quota (126 sample with and without allergic rhinitis). After that, each PEF’s subject was measured by Mini wright-peak flow meter, beside height, weight, and fitness level (harvard step test) measurement. Result : Total sample is 144 students; 30 students (20,8%) with allergic rhinitis have lower PEF which compared with normal Indonesian PEF, 14 students (9,7%) without allergic rhinitis have lower PEF. Students with RA have lower PEF more than without RA (X2; p= 0,014 RP=2,52 (CI 95% = 1,193-5,306)).Result of logistic regression; fitness level and RA are independent risk factor of decreasing PEF. Conclusion : Allergic rhinitis have a relationship with decreasing PEF compare to those without allergic rhinitis Keywords : Allergic Rhinitis, Asthma, PEF
