Abstract

Background: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition when thrombus formed on deep venous mainly in the lower leg and inguinal. Blood clots can block blood from the lower limb to back to the heart. Thrombosis in the United States is the leading cause of death. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is an emergency state that must be quickly diagnosed and therapy. Prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can be done by giving anticoagulant; one of them by using heparin which is given through an intravenous line. Purpose: Knowing the effect of giving heparin intravenously as a prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which is assessed by the levels of fibrinogen. Methods: This study was performed on 10 patients who were treated in the ICU. Blood samples taken before and after heparin administration, namely 1 hour after medication is given, and then stored in EDTA bottle. Samples were sent immediately to the laboratory for examination. Samples tested for distribution normality of blood fibrinogen levels by using the Shapiro-Wilk test, if p > 0.05 then the distribution is called normal. The analytical analysis will be conducted to examine group differences by using pre and posttest one group design, significant when p <0.05. Results: Analysis by paired t test between fibrinogen levels before and after administration of intravenous heparin showed no significant difference with p value = 0.237. Conclusion: there is no significant decrease in fibrinogen levels after administration of intravenous heparin. Key words: Intravenous heparin, deep vein thrombosis, fibrinogen levels
