Abstract

Background: With the increase of the age, the organ function would have reduced and it could raise various health complaints like temporomandibular disorders. The cardinal symptomps and signs of temporomandibular disorders were pain in masseter muscle, temporomandibular joint and or temporalis muscle regions, mouth-opening limitation, and temoporomandibular joint sounds. These complaints could influence the oral health and later would predictly influence the quality of life. Aim: To describe the impact of temporomandibular disorders on oral health-related quality of life in elderly. Methods: Type of study was an analytical observational with cross sectional design approach. Samples were selected by purposive sampling method. Subjects were elderly. Data consists of temporomandibular disorders status diagnosed by Anamnestic index and Dysfunction index, and oral health-related quality of life by OHIP-14. Normality data was tested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov then followed by Mann Whitney U-test. Results: Total samples were 150, 110 (73,3%) samples with temporomandibular disorders. Mean score of OHIP-14 in elderly group with temporomandibular disorders was 12,04±9,64, and in elderly group without temporomandibular disorders was 10,63±8,66. Kolmogorov-Sminov test showed an abnormal data distribution, thus Mann Whitney U-test was conducted then it didn’t show significant differences (p>0.05). Conclusion: Temporomandibular disorders didn’t influence the oral health-related quality of life in elderly. Keywords: Temporomandibular disorders, oral health-related quality of life, elderly
