Abstract
Background: Dental caries is one of the most complained dental and oral disease by the public. Caries is resulted from demineralization process which caused the damage in dental’s hard tissues. Diabetes mellitus is one of the predisposition factors which affect the forming of caries because of the uncontrolled levels of blood glucose which caused a high glucose level in the saliva. Objective: To find out the impact of the status of diabetes mellitus to the degree of dental caries. Method: This study is an analytical observational with cross sectional design. The samples were taken with consecutive sampling methode. Subjects were diabetes mellitus patients in Internal Ambulatory Ward of Dr. Kariadi Hospital and Wening Wardoyo Geriatric Institution Semarang, with the total of 100 people. To know the status of diabetes mellitus, this study used examination of Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG), the degree of caries were assessed using DMF-T score. Statistical test were performed using Mann-Whitney test by firstly assessed the data distribution using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Result: There is a significant difference between the degree of dental caries in the controlled diabetes mellitus group compared to the uncontrolled group (p=0,002). Conclusion: The status of diabetes mellitus influence the degree of dental caries. Keywords: The status of diabetes mellitus, degree of dental caries, fasting plasma glucose.
