Abstract

Background: Patients in the Intensive Care Unit tend to be at risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). It is estimated there are at least 800 000 cases of Deep Vein Thrombosis in the United States. It is therefore recommended to all patients in the ICU to be given anticoagulants as Deep Vein Thrombosis prophylactic. One anticoagulant that can be used in the prophylaxis of Deep Vein Thrombosis is heparin given intravenously. However, heparin administration is necessary to control the PPT and PTTK in order to prevent the occurrence of side effects such as bleeding. Objectives: To determine the effect of intravenous administration of heparin as a prophylaxis DVT against increasing PPT and PTTK. Methods : This study is an experimental research study with pre test and post-test one group design. This research was conducted on 10 patients in ICU of RSUP dr. Kariadi Semarang who meet inclusion and exclusion criteria. Blood samples are taken before and 1 hour after administration of intravenous heparin. The samples are sent to the Clinical Pathology Laboratory for examination on PPT and PTTK. Statistical tests using paired t test and Wilcoxon test. Results : It was found that significant differences in PPT values before and after intravenous administration, p = 0.007 (p <0.05). It was found a significant difference of PTTK value before and after administration of intravenous heparin, p = 0.005 (p <0.05). Conclusion : Awarding of intravenous heparin prophylaxis as deep vein thrombosis increase on PPT and PTTK. Key words: heparin, deep vein thrombosis, PPT and PTTK
