Abstract

Background: Natural dyes is believed to provide more value "safe". Natural pigments produced by plants. Carotenoids, which are pigments giving a red-yellow color and is often used as a food coloring. Research on the acute toxicity test was conducted to determine the safety and acute toxicity effects of carotenoids against gastric biopigmen suspension of mice Balb / c. Method: Research was an experimental study using The Post Test Only Controlled Group Design. 25 male balb/c mice were divided into 1 control group and 4 treatment groups. The treatment was given only on the first day. The control group was given aquadest. The other groups, P1 was given carotenoid with 5 mg/kgBB dose, P2 with 50 mg/kgBB dose, P3 with 500 mg/kgBB dose, and P4 with 2000 mg/kgBB dose Result: A study of gastric histopathology were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test, p = 0.016 values obtained. Followed by Mann-Whitney test results obtained that there are significant differences between the K-P2 (p = 0.014), K-P3 (p = 0.023), K-P4 (p = 0.009), P1-P2 (p = 0.033), P1 -P3 (p = 0.043), P1-P4 (p = 0.009), P2-P4 (p = 0.027). Conclusion: Granting suspension of carotenoids in acute biopigmen give effect to the picture of gastric histopathology. Pathological changes of gastric mucosa according to a given dose level. The higher the dose, the higher the level of epithelial damage. Safe dose is ≤ 5 mg / kg. Keywords: Carotenoid, gastric histopathological
