Abstract

Background According to WHO data, more than one billion people worldwide use of cigarettes and caused the deaths of more than 5 million people each year. It is estimated the majority of deaths occur in people who live in countries with low and middle income, including Indonesia. use of cigarettes is one of the biggest risk factor in disease is not contagious, because the policy was implemented without smoking area has been identified as a primary intervention strategy to control the disease which is not contagious, but in reality many people on a daily behavior do not indicate compliance with these regulations. Aim To know student and staff participation in No Smoking Areas comply with the regulations in the Diponegoro University School of Medicine campus environment Semarang. Methods The study was observational analytic study with cross-sectional study. Samples were obtained by taking the respondents randomly (simple random sampling) until the time the study ended in July 2012. Primary data in the form of descriptive data were presented in tabular form with a pictures or diagrams. Data were analyzed using chi-square test (χ2) Results There was a significant association between the background of smoking behavior (p = 0.01) and knowledge of no smoking areas regulation (p = 0.007) to the level of compliance, while knowledge of the dangers of cigarettes content showed no significant results (p = 0.6), then the influence of the environment provided risk 1.6 (1.1 to 2.2) times the level of compliance, not know the dangers of cigarettes content provided risk 1.3 (0.5 to 3.4) times, and not know the no smoking areas regulation provided risk 1.5 (1.1 to 2.0) times. Conclusion The background of smoking behavior and knowledge of no smoking areas regulation affect the level of compliance while knowledge of the dangers of cigarettes content has no effect.
