Abstract

Background: High parity was associated with lipid profile changes, insulin resistance, estrogen deficiency, hypertension, and oxidative stress which influence women’s health in later life. Some researches found the relation between parity and cardiovascular disease. There are still few researches concerning its association with ischemic stroke. Goals: The aim of this study is to evaluate does multiparity increase the risk of ischemic stroke among patients in Dr. Kariadi Hospital Semarang. Methods: This was a case-control study which was done since April to June 2011. Sixty eight women with ischemic stroke and sixty eight without ischemic stroke in Neurology Department of Dr. Kariadi Hospital Semarang met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection used questionnaire about age, parity, cigarette smoking, history of diabetes, history of hypertension, Body Mass Index, history of hormonal contraception, and menopausal state. The data was presented in tables, with chi square, odds ratio, and logistic regression test as statistical analysis. Results: Chi square test using α=0.05, IK95%, power 80% results odds ratios which value more than one for parity above two (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, multivariate analysis results odds ratio 2,6 (1,1 to 6,4) for parity above three (p=0,033). Bivariate logistic regression test for parity as numerical variable results odds ratio 1,4 (p<0.001; 1,1 to 1,8) for each addition of parity. Multivariate analysis includes hypertension and diabetes as significant predictors. Conclusions: Multiparity (parity above three) increase the risk of ischemic stroke among patients in Dr. Kariadi Hospital Semarang. The result of this study is still confounded by hypertension and diabetes. Keywords: ischemic stroke, multiparity, Dr. Kariadi Hospital Semarang
