Abstract

Vacuum Distillation is a process of separation of two kompenen which have high boiling point, The method that used is by lowering the surface pressure is lower than 1 atm, so the boiling point will be decrease. Ginger pulp is already ginger that have a little water content, but still has a high volatile oil content. Usually, ginger pulp are as a waste in herbal medicine industry. If we compare with fresh ginger which has 0.3% of yield, ginger pulp has 2.8 to 3% of yield. Vacuum distillation are used in this research. The principle of this research are based on the phenomenon of vacuum under 1 atm for lower boiling point solvent that contained ginger oil components are not damaged and the time required for distilled ginger oil faster. Solvents used were water. Water are used because of more economical. The function of the solvent dissolves the oil component is contained ginger then evaporate along with water. After that the mixture between oil and water are separated using a separator funnel. The results of this research are ginger oil with chohobation distillation process has a good quality . It is seen from the density (0,885 gr/ml), refractive indeks (1,48), optic rotation (-30º), are located on ISO (International Standard Oil of Ginger) where %yield are 0,896%. Actually for ginger oil with steam distillation process has a quality that suitable with ISO where density (0,814 gr/ml), refractive indeks (1,47), optic rotation (-35º), and %yield are 0.26%. Keywords : vacuum distillation, ginger pulp, ginger oil
