Abstract
Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by epidermal hyperproliferation and inflammation with scaly erythematous patches, with unknown causes. Psoriasis affects both sexes equally, and can occur at any age, although it most commonly appears for the first time between the age from 15 to 25 years old. The prevalence of psoriasis is said to be 2% of the world population. There are only a few reports of the prevalence of psoriasis in Indonesia. In Adam Malik Hospital Medan the frequency around 1.05% (2010), while in Kariadi Hospital Semarang the prevalence was 1.4% (2007-2011) with the most common form were psoriasis vulgaris. Because of its chronicity and severity, psoriasis can have a major negative impact on the physical, emotional, and psychosocial which can affect the quality of life. Aim: To assess the relation between psoriasis area severity index and the quality of life. Method: This study was a cross-sectional analytic. The subjects were patient with psoriasis vulgaris at the Outpatient Dermato-Venerology Clinic of dr. Kariadi general hospital from Mei to July 2012. The severity of disease were measured with the psoriasis area severity index, while the quality of life were measured with questionnaire of DQOL. Result: There were 13 patients consist of 5 males and 8 females. All of the patients have affected their quality of life. 69.2% of subjects were mild to moderate psoriasis and have low impacts, 7.7% of mild to moderate psoriasis have a high impacts, and 23.1% of subjects were severe psoriasis and have high impacts on their quality of life. Conclusions: The more severe the disease, the higher it affects the quality of life. Keyword: psoriasis vulgaris, severity index, quality of life
