Abstract
Abstract Communication competence is communicator capabilities to use various resources in the communication process. Communication competence is a major requirement to possess an individual in the process of effective communication with others. By having individual communication competence, humans could communicate their purpose well and right on target. Interfaith couple who have been oriented for marriage is supposed to have communication competence. It is important to communicate parents so the harmonization of family won’t be broken. Communication competence of interfaith couple is related to their parents’ parenting style. The research involved interfaith couple who had a solid commitment. The research’s purpose is to know whether there is communication competence of interfaith couples in communicating their seriousness relationship to their parents. Theoretical approach in this study are Communication Competence Theory (Spitzberg, 2004), and Parenting Style Theory (Le Poire, 2006). Through a phenomenological approach in qualitative methods, researcher used an indepth interview as a data collection technique. In communicating with parents, interfaith couples are expected to have communication competence consists of three components which are motivation, knowledge, and skill. Those three components are related to parenting style that applied in their family. Interfaith couples who grew up with general parenting style, the combined parenting (authoritative and authoritarian) tend to have three main components of communication competence. Otherwise, interfaith couples who grew up with pure authoritarian parenting style can’t comply the three main components of communication competence. Interfaith couples who have communication competence can communicate their serious relationship with their partner to parents. Meanwhile, interfaith couples who don’t have communication competence tend to be affraid to communicate anything to their parents, including communicate their serious relationship with their partner.
