Abstract

Background: Estimation of burn surface area is important factor. In small and patchy burn injury, the palm is used to estimate the percentage of burned patients which is considered as 1%. The percentage of palms are different in some literatures. Because there is no research that examine individual body weight variations of palm area with fingers and without fingers in Indonesia's population, it will be excavated about comparison between palm area with fingers and palm area without fingers to body surface area in various of adult body mass index. Methods: This analytic observational study involved 60 adult students of Medical Faculty Diponegoro University. The samples were divided into three groups based on BMI, namely thin, normal and overweight, each group consists of 20 people. Body surface area calculated by Mosteller formula and palm area calculated by AutoCad. Percentage of palm area is determined by dividing the palm area with total body surface area. Results: The average percentage of palm area with fingers on the thin group is 0,789%, normal is 0,761% and overweight is 0,664%. The average percentage of area palm without fingers on the thin group is 0,444%, normal is 0,437% and overweight is 0,378%. However, the analysis of test results found that only the overweight group that has significant differences with p<0,001. Conclusion: There is a decline in the percentage of palms area with fingers and palms area without fingers to body surface area at an increased adult BMI. Keywords: body mass index, burns area, palms area
