Abstract

Background: Application of mechanical ventilator on ICU patient as mechanical aids often causes nosocomial infection. Common nosocomial infection which is usually found is Ventilator Assosiated-Pneumonia (VAP). VAP prevention in this research used pharmacological pathway using chlorhexidine 0,2% and povidone iodine 1% and the effectiveness ratio from both solutions was measured in order to prevent VAP. Some research which have been conducted show that chlorhexidine is more effective than povidone iodine. This is supported by McGee DC and Gould MK which claim that chlorhexidine is more effective to prevent biofilm formation compared to povidone iodine. Methods: This research is a research with experimental design which data collecting is done with concecutive random sampling. Research sample consist of 32 patients with mechanical ventilator in ICU which was divided by two groups, group I used chlorhexidine 0,2% as oral hygiene and group II used povidone iodine 1% as oral hygiene. Chlorhexidine 0,2% oral antiseptic administration and povidone iodine 1% as free variable, whereas number of leucocytes as dependend variable. Data analysis was processed with SPSS for Windows with significance level test p<0,05. Result: In mann-whitney test, difference between administration of povidone iodine 1% pretest and posttest and administration of chlorhexidine 0,2% pretest and posttest was used to see the decrease in the number of leucocytes, which showed no significant decrease in it p=0,345 (p>0,05). Conclusion: The result of the research showed that chlorhexidine 0,2% had the same effectivity with povidone iodine 1%.
