Abstract

Background: Staphylococcus aureus is a normal flora in humans found in the skin and upper respiratory tract. Athletes of direct contact sport, such as wrestlers, have a high rate in tendency of S.aureus colonization. It could be dangerous if a sportsman who has S.aureus colonization spread S.aureus to the entire team. This study is aimed to explore risk factors for S.aureus colonization in wrestlers. Methods: An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional sampling of the 46 wrestlers who met the criteria for inclusion and exclusion in Klub Gulat Garuda. Data retrieved by performing a nasal swab and filling a questionnaire to get a variable risk factor. Identification of S.aureus colonies was identified through a series of studies in microbiology laboratory. Data was analyzed by Chisquare/Fisher-exact then performed logistic regression in SPSS 15.0 for windows. Result: Positive S.aureus colonization was found in 15 samples. Prevalence of S.aureus colonization in wrestlers in this study was 32,61%. Prolonged exercise more than 12 hours per week was a risk factor for colonization of S.aureus in wrestlers (PR = 26.878; 95% CI 2.352 to 307.216 ; p = 0.008) and the habit of sharing of personal equipment was also a risk factor for S.aureus colonization (PR = 17.721; 95% CI 1.794 to 175.019; p =0.014). While the body mass index (BMI) (PR= 0,202 ; 95% CI 0,038 to 1,085 ; p = 0.062) had no significant effect against S.aureus colonization on the wrestlers. Conclusion: Prevalence of S.aureus colonization in wrestlers in this study is 32,61%. Prolonged exercise more than 12 hours per week and the habit of sharing personal equipment are risk factors in S.aureus colonization in wrestlers while BMI had no effect in S.aureus colonization in wrestlers. Key words: risk factors, S.aureus colonization, wrestlers
