Abstract
Backgrond: S.aureus is an important human pathogen and has the ability to cause infection with the typical signs of inflammation, necrosis and abscess formation. Athletes with direct contact sports such as taekwondo athlete has a higher level of contamination. These risks will be increased in case of direct contact with fellow college friends or opponents who have open wounds. It is a dangerous thing if an athlete who has been contaminated by S.aureus and they did not realize it, then they can make the whole team and coaches and staff contaminated by S.aureus. Methods: This study uses a cross sectional design and survey approach. The sample in the study was 96 taekwondo athletes from several dojang, they were Dojang Singa, Dojang Majapahit and Dojang Tlogosari. Nasal swab and questionaire were collected. Identification of S. aureus was performed according to microbiology standart. The data was analyzed with bivariate analysis (Chi-square test/ Fischer rest), and multivariate analysis (logistic regression) by using SPSS 16. For Windows. Result: Results of the study show that the frequency of exercise and smoking habits were not the risk factors of colonization of S. aureus. While other variables, the custom of wearing a towel together (p = 0,008; RP = 3,438; CI 95% = 1,347-8,775), location of exercise in the outdoor (p = 0,023; RP = 2,600; CI 95% = 1,250-8,162), and not washing hands with soap (p = 0,013; RP = 3,194; CI 95% = 1,250-8,162) were the risk factors of colonization of S. aureus. Conclusion: Wearing a towel together, the location of the exercise in the outdoor and not washing hands with soap are the risk factors of colonization of S. aureus in taekwondo athletes in Semarang.
