Abstract

Background: Staphylococcus aureus is normal flora in humans, that can cause serious infections in both community and hospital. This germ normally live on human skin and mucosa as an asymptomatic colonization. Individuals with asymptomatic colonization is called carrier. Street children are considered high potential to become a S. aureus carrier. This research aimed to know factors associated with S. aureus’s colonization among street children in Semarang. Methods: This research used cross-sectional design. Research sample were 75 street children from Bulu market, Johar market, Randusari market, Tawang railway station, Poncol railway station, and Simpang Lima region in Semarang. Primary data that were taken includes nasal swab and questionnaire-supporting interview. Nasal swab specimen then identified through laboratory research. Data were analyzed using bivariate analysis, Prevalence Ratio, and multivariate analysis with SPSS 17.0 for Windows. Result: Carrier rate of S. aureus among street children in Semarang is 4%. Bivariate analysis resulted that there were no significant p values for all variables, smoking (RP= 4,857; CI 95%= 0,418 - 56,493; p=0,207), nose picking (RP= 0,625; CI 95%= 0,054 – 7,207; p=1,000), washing hand with soap (RP= 1,750; CI 95%= 0,149 – 20,564; p=0,004) dan nose piercing (RP= 3,500; CI 95%= 0,287 – 42,639; p=0,543). One variable were analyzed again with logistic regression, smoking with S. aureus colonization. From logistic regression, they were no significant p value (p= 0,207). Conclusion: Carrier rate of S. aureus among street children in Semarang was very low. Smoking, nose picking, washing hand with soap, and nose piercing, did not influence S. aureus’s colonization among street children in Semarang. Keywords: Staphylococcus aureus, colonization, street children
