MEMAHAMI PENGALAMAN KOMUNIKASI WARGA MULTIETNIS (STUDI PADA MASYARAKAT DI KAMPUNG PETOLONGAN SEMARANG)

Abstract

ABSTRACT TITLE : UNDERSTANDING COMMUNICATION EXPERIENCE OF MULTIETHNIC CITIZENS (STUDIES ON THE SOCIETY AT KAMPUNG PETOLONGAN SEMARANG) NAME : NUR LAILI MARDHIYANI NIM : D2C007064 Nowadays, the conditions of the environmental and the community at Kampung Petolongan make multiethnic citizens who living on it try to adapt with the changing of environment and local communities. Many citizens dicided to move from Petolongan because of environmental factors that are not comfortable and now the abandoned houses converted into businesses. The changing function of the house affect the interactions and relationships between multiethnic citizens who living at Petolongan. This purpose of the study is to see how the communication experience of multiethnic citizens at Kampung Petolongan adapting with the social changes that occurred in there region. So, they can maintain their relationship. The theory used is the Intercultural Adaptation Theory propounded by Ellingsworth and this theory is supported by Relational Maintenance Theory. The individual experience is described by phenomenology method that gives priority to consciously individual experience when they try to interpret one thing. Researcher uses indepth interview to four informants who came from Arabian, Khoja, Chinese, and Javanese are more than 30 years living at Petolongan. In addition, researcher also doing some passive observation to add information to support the testimony of the informants. The results of this study indicate that multiethnic citizens at Petolongan did some ways to be able to adapt with the environment and society in order to maintaining their relationship. The way they do are think that there is no differences between them, they have to use persuasive communication, and use of public space as their media to communicate. The communication barriers are found by citizens of multiethnic are social distance, stereotypes, and prejudices. Multiethnic citizens have intercultural communication competence that they use to communicate with other. Their backgrounds while living in Petolongan, economic, and desire to continue the tradition of silaturahmi and religious events in the multiethnic citizens motivated Petolongan to keep in touch with other people. In addition, good knowledge about the condition of the region, society and the changes that occur and knowledge about the positive and negative stereotypes other individuals become basic information about how they should communicate. Ability to understand, tolerance of other ethnicities that they had showed in years without any conflict in Petolongan, so they keep doing that behavior until now. Banyaknya warga yang memilih pindah akibat dari faktor lingkungan yang tidak nyaman, membuat rumah-rumah yang ditinggalkan kini beralih fungsi menjadi tempat usaha. Perubahan inilah yang kemudian berpengaruh pada interaksi dan hubungan warga multietnis yang masih bermukim di Petolongan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana pengalaman komunikasi warga multietnis di Petolongan dalam beradaptasi untuk mempertahankan hubungan menghadapi perubahan sosial yang terjadi di wilayahnya. Teori yang digunakan adalah Intercultural Adaptation Theory yang dikemukakan oleh Ellingsworth dan didukung teori Relational Maintenance Theory. Pengalaman individu ini diungkapkan dengan metode fenomenologi yang mengutamakan pada pengalaman individu secara sadar dalam memaknai suatu hal. Peneliti menggunakan teknik wawancara mendalam terhadap empat orang informan yang masing-masing berasal dari etnis Arab, Koja, Tionghoa, dan Jawa yang lebih dari 30 tahun bermukim di Petolongan. Selain itu, peneliti juga melakukan observasi pasif untuk menambah informasi yang dapat mendukung keterangan dari para informan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan warga multietnis di Petolongan melakukan beberapa cara untuk dapat beradaptasi dengan lingkungan dan masyarakat Petolongan saat ini dalam mempertahankan hubungan. Cara yang mereka lakukan adalah menganggap etnis lain setara dengan dirinya, adanya komunikasi persuasif, dan memanfaatkan ruang publik sebagai media mereka untuk berkomunikasi. Hambatan komunikasi yang dirasakan warga multietnis adalah jarak sosial, sterotip, dan prasangka. Warga multietnis memiliki kompetensi komunikasi antarbudaya yang mereka gunakan untuk berkomunikasi dengan warga lain. Latar belakang mereka selama hidup di Petolongan, ekonomi, dan keinginan untuk melanjutkan tradisi silaturahmi dan acara keagamaan menjadi motivasi warga multietnis di Petolongan untuk tetap berkomunikasi dengan warga lain. Selain itu, pengetahuan yang cukup mengenai kondisi wilayah, masyarakat dan perubahan yang terjadi, serta pengetahuan tentang stereotip positif dan negatif terhadap individu lain menjadi bekal bagaimana mereka harus berkomunikasi. Kemampuan dalam memahami, toleransi dengan etnis lain telah mereka perlihatkan setelah hidup berdampingan selama bertahun-tahun tanpa adanya konflik yang terjadi di Petolongan, sehingga perilaku tersebut terus mereka kembangkan hingga saat ini.
