Abstract
American Dream has become a powerful magnet that attracts millions of people to come to the United States. This phenomenon has been widely exposed through many media. Film is one of them that show many aspects in the dream, such as its pursuit, value-sharing, or even the paradox that lies within the false interpretation toward the American Dream. In his thesis, the writer uses two approaches regarding the purpose of the writing: exponential and socio-criminology. For the exponential approach, the writer seeks trough several intrinsic aspects. Meanwhile, for the socio-criminology, the writer applies Differential Association Theory which is to prove that criminal behaviors are derived from the interaction with those who prefer to break the law rather than to obey it. By using those approaches, the writer finds the correlation between the main character’s interactions to the other characters with criminal behavior he takes, especially in his pursuit to the American Dream. Moreover, his narrow premises on American Dream lead him to tragic ending.
