Abstract
Joko Sungging is one of the most popular legends in coastal area of Java, in particulary Jepara. It is because the content of this legend related to the people vocation, that is ukir. So, in their perception, Joko Sungging is a cultural hero. I base this study, with etnographical method that is go turn to the field, interview to some informants and then analyzed with the emic’s perpective. From this study, we know that the legends is functional for the people: education, and proyection of expectation its people. Keywords: popular legend, a cultural hero, etnographical method.
