Abstract
Background.Diarrhea is still the main cause of childhood mortality and morbidity in developing countries. The efforts to overcome diarrhea is important due to its high morbidity and mortality. Mother’s role (knowledge, attitude, practice) is important to decrease the duration of acute diarrhea in children during inpatient, therefore it is needed to provide them with knowledge of diarrhea, how to prevent, stop and management of diarrhea in children during inpatient. Objective.To assess and analyze mother’s role and duration of acute diarrhea in children during inpatient in Dr. Kariadi General Central Hospital Semarang. Methods. Cross sectional study with subjects 6-24 months years old children suffered from acute diarrhea who were hospitalized in Dr. Kariadi General Central Hospital Semarang from May to August 2011. Assessment were done to the patients’ mother by interview and questioner. Statistical analyzes with bivariate analyzes, for hypothesis test mother’s role and duration of acute diarrhea in children during inpatient was done with Spearman Rho Correlation Test. Result.Thirty five patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. Total score of correlation between mother’s knowledge and length of stay was positive (0,27) with weak correlation. Total score of correlation between mother’s attitude and length of stay was negative (-0,107) wih weak correlation.Total score of correlation between mother’s practice and length of stay was negative (-0,034) and had weak correlation, where total score for correlation of KAP (knowledge, attitude, practice) and length of stay was negative (-0,032) and had weak correlation. Conclusion. There was a negative and weak correlation between mother’s role and duration of acute diarrhea in children 6-24 months old during inpatient in Dr. Kariadi General Central Hospital Semarang.
